Rothko

Look, it's my misery that I have to paint this kind of painting, it's your misery that you have to love it, and the price of the misery is thirteen hundred and fifty dollars.

It must be a funny feeling when your art all the sudden becomes that expensive and well known.
Also in this quote i recognize the old idea that art creation is more a struggle and pain than pleasure, but the artist is forced to work by the desire to express himself.
There's a great quote by Giacometti:
"If only someone else could paint what I see, it would be marvellous, because then I wouldn't have to paint at all."
