I don't agree with mark Twain on this one. I think civilization is what is keeping us from war, rage, destruction. It's the shield we build around the worst part of the human condition, to prevent it from being loose :)

I agree with you both, you are both right. You've just chosen to comment two different aspects of the problem, you chose the good side and Twain the negative side. And these good and bad things put together create our reality and our home - the civilization.

I live in a very tough neighborhood, that's why I said that, I guess. The other day, I almost got killed because I touched a guy's car why passing by it (it was on the sidewalk). He screamed: "How dare you touch my car? I'm gonna kill you!". He sort of meant it, but we were standing under a police video camera. This man, as many others, may not be as civilized as he should have been.

Yes, i agree that if we compare the good effects that civilization gave us and the bad side-effects that Twain is talking about, the bad ones sound quite harmless.
