Well I am not sure what Mr Helion means. Chosing to be an artist may be riskful, because you can't be certain you'll live of it. And because you choose to listen to something strong and true that lies within yourself. But today, it can be so snobbish to say "Well I am an artist"! It can be a way to have people look up to you. Especially now that the frontiers of Art are so uncertain. Yeah, you can be an artist if you just stand naked in the streets of Paris with your skin painted black and yellow, screaming "I am an artist!". I am not sure this word really means anything anymore, that's the problem - in some levels of society, that is.

I agree with you that artist chooses to listen something that lies within himself. And there are so many unknown regions inside of us, who knows what can be found there..
For me the most risky part is that as much as we try to control it, there is always a bit of accident in the process of art creation. Ambrose Bierce in his devil's dictionary gave an interesting definition of planning: To bother about the best method of accomplishing an accidental result. We could say that artist has the steering-wheel in his hands, but he doesn't really know where he is heading.
Your idea about a naked guy painted in black and yellow reminded me on a quote by Vernon Fisher: "If you can't make good art, make it big and paint it red." And i agree that there are a lot of people today that are saying "I am an artist", and i would even say that they all are artists, good or bad artists. Marcel Duchamp said that art may be bad, good or indifferent, but, whatever adjective is used, we must call it art, and bad art is still art in the same way as a bad emotion is still an emotion. And another of my favorite quotes about bad art: Bad art is more tragically beautiful than good art because it documents human failure.
