Friendship

Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art... It has no survival value;
rather it is one of those things that give value to survival.
C. S. Lewis

it gives meaning to life. like art, philosophy, love. maybe we wouldn't die without it but we certainly live with it. without it, we survive. i rather live :) but that's what the quote says in a more beautiful and subtle way, i guess.

It seems hard to define with words what friendship is, or what love is (you added it to the list of things that make us truly alive, i like that). There's a quote by Albert Camus which i find great, and which in a way answers the question:
"Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow. Don't walk behind me, I may not lead.
Walk beside me and be my friend."
I guess that is friendship: me walking beside someone, and someone walking beside me..

I think that goes for love as well. But yes, definitively,that could be a great definition of what friendship is.

I agree, love also fits the description pretty well.
