A large part of the beauty of a picture arises from the struggle which an artist wages with his limited medium.

So true! I love Matisse's paper cuts. They really are amazing.

Yes, I like mediums which make you express yourself with so few elements.
There's another quote by G. K. Chesterton: "Art is limitation. The essence of every picture is the frame."

Hi, Thinker. I just yesterday found your blog. And I am thrilled and very happy to have done so. You have compiled so much to think about, enjoy, and take comfort in.

In a film on Swedish television about the painter Erland Cullberg he mentioned Rouault. While looking for paintings by Rouault on the internet I found one to be really beautiful, and that one was linked to your blog with the quotation from May 8...

I will visit your blog often.
Thank you.

How true! It reminds me of our discussion on "dry" creative periods and the struggle artists sometimes live with their art. I am truly happy with my work when I feel I have fought with my medium and not totally controlled it from the start; otherwise it's just doing the same work all over again and it's not so interesting :)

I agree, it is funny how artist is in a way imprisoned in his medium while he works. For me creation is sometimes like wrestling with the material, winning and losing battles with it. It's like a duel.
